BMW is developing an all-new off-road SUV designed to take on the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen. Codenamed G74, the model is expected to enter production in 2029.
According to Car.News, the G74 will be based on BMW’s popular X5 platform and produced at the company’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA. However, BMW has yet to officially confirm details of the model. It’s believed that the G74 will serve more as a halo project—similar to the performance-focused BMW XM—rather than a mass-market bestseller.
The new SUV will face strong competition from the G-Wagen, Land Rover Defender, and the BMW-backed Ineos Grenadier. It’s also rumored that the G74 could replace the plug-in hybrid XM, which will end production in November 2028.
The exact powertrain for the G74 remains unconfirmed. BMW’s expertise in hybrid technology, particularly the plug-in hybrid V8 used in the XM, could give it an advantage against the V8 Mercedes-AMG G-Wagen. While BMW has surpassed Mercedes in EV sales, the slow market performance of the fully electric G-Wagen may lead BMW to approach this segment cautiously.
In terms of dimensions, according to Car.News, the G74 is expected to be similar in size to the G-Wagen—around 4.87 meters in length, 1.98 meters in width, and with a ground clearance of 282 mm, as seen in the AMG G63. Despite its X5 underpinnings, the design is said to prioritize off-road capabilities.
Until now, BMW has offered off-road-oriented equipment like the xOffroad package in X5 models, but has never produced a true hardcore off-roader to rival the G-Wagen. The G74 could mark BMW’s first serious contender in the rugged off-road segment.
