Vuela PanAm Launches Nonprofit Project to Empower Young People Through Badminton in the Americas

Vuela PanAm, a nonprofit begun by Oliver Chen and Guillermo Buendía, is introducing an initiative that employs narrative in order to empower youth from marginalized communities in the Americas through badminton.

Canada, 8th Jul 2025 – The non-profit organization Vuela PanAm founded by Oliver Chen and Guillermo Buendía plans to use badminton as a transformative tool to fight social disparities and build up young people throughout the Americas. Vuela PanAm will use compelling stories of athletes who triumphed over obstacles to bring visibility to neglected athletes and generate increased support for the sport particularly in underrepresented communities.

The project provides an opportunity for marginalized athletes mainly from Latin America to share their stories while inspiring upcoming generations. Vuela PanAm seeks to make these athletes’ stories visible to create policy transformations and funding opportunities that will end their inequality and boost their access to sports development.

From Humble Beginnings to a Growing Movement

When Oliver Chen first touched a badminton racket at age six in Toronto community centers Vuela PanAm’s history began. Young players across the Americas face various challenges to acquire suitable equipment and competition opportunities although Chen received coaching and resources to help his development. Chen experienced the obstacles that players in Bahia Brazil faced during his trip there because he observed their competitions under insufficient facilities with no financial backing.Guillermo Buendía stood out because he was a Peruvian boy who maintained an energetic love for badminton despite all his struggles. Both Chen and Buendía decided to create a platform because they witnessed his unwavering spirit and dedication to overcome the financial and social barriers needed for recognition. The organization Vuela PanAm emerged as a nonprofit entity to tell their stories and boost sports visibility throughout the area.

The High Cost of Competing: A Barrier for Many

The sport of badminton which people often consider inexpensive has evolved into a sport requiring substantial financial resources for competitors. The total cost for international competition participants in Canada includes $5,000 for transportation along with coaching fees and competition expenses. Many Latin American competitors face more significant challenges since they need to find minimal funds to participate in basic tournaments. The combined effects of financial constraints and inadequate support systems restrict young American athletes from reaching their potential and result in the region’s inability to win Olympic badminton medals.

Through its mission Vuela PanAm works to raise awareness about badminton’s uneven playing field while fostering inclusive badminton practices in the region. Through storytelling Vuela PanAm works to connect policy makers and community members to develop solutions for better opportunities in badminton.

Amplifying Voices: Using Stories to Inspire Change

The organization Vuela PanAm focuses on showcasing athletes who faced incredible challenges including Canadian Olympic medalist Michelle Li and Peruvian up-and-comer Inés Castillo and Mexican rising star Luis Montoya. Through its podcast Vuela PanAm tells their life stories which shows listeners about the personal costs athletes take for excellence.

Through its podcast Vuela PanAm also produces a zine that combines essays with comics and photos showcasing athletes’ stories for distribution to federations and government officials and potential athletes. The zine aims to create more dialogue about how badminton’s power dynamics are changing and the need for increased sport investment.

The story maintains equal importance to financial funding according to Oliver Chen who co-founded Vuela PanAm. The athlete stories we share create two effects: they make their struggles more relatable to humanize their fights while building a community that supports them.

The organization launched modestly to achieve ambitious goals
Vuela PanAm initiated its operation through a $1,000 seed funding source during its launch several weeks back. The initial funding of $1,000 marks the beginning of an expanding movement which is currently generating increasing momentum. The organization plans to add more supporters together with champions and contributors who feel inspired by stories of athletes working for a better future as the movement grows.

The goal is to create a large impact through small actions according to Chen. By giving underrepresented badminton players a platform to share their stories we will motivate others to participate in the movement which will create an equal future for badminton.

Badminton functions as a social transformation instrument

The organization views badminton as a tool that goes beyond competitive sport because it functions as an instrument for social transformation at Vuela PanAm. Through badminton young athletes gain access to opportunities which transform their lives by offering personal growth together with social progress.

The team at Vuela PanAm believes proper support will transform badminton into a powerful social change force across the Americas. The organization Vuela PanAm operates between Toronto and Bahia and Montreal and Lima to stop athletes from abandoning their dreams because of financial barriers and social challenges.

Vuela PanAm: Creating a Brighter Future for Youth Across the Americas

The sport of badminton will follow the same rising popularity pattern as basketball did in Canada. Badminton will achieve greater success through the diverse strong communities of Toronto which serve as an ideal location for the underdog story. Vuela PanAm works with local and global stakeholders to create opportunities through badminton that benefit young people throughout the Americas.

The purpose of Vuela PanAm involves connecting communities through narrative storytelling to help youth athletes access the support needed for their development. Vuela PanAm works to continue elevating the voices of athletes who have been ignored for an extended period.
