Tesla arch-rival Polestar achieves sales record

0

Polestar, the electric vehicle brand often considered a key rival to Tesla, has achieved its highest-ever global sales for the first half of a calendar year, according to Cars.News. The company recorded a 51% year-on-year increase in global sales for the first six months of 2025, reaching a total of 30,319 vehicles sold worldwide.

This marks a significant leap from 20,371 units sold during the same period in 2024, when sales were impacted by the cancellation of a major Hertz order. It also surpasses Polestar’s previous H1 record of 27,868 cars sold in 2023. The milestone even edges out the brand’s second-half 2022 sales (30,291 units), making H1 2025 Polestar’s best six-month performance to date.

Australian Market Sees Strong Growth

Australia played a key role in the brand’s global growth. Sales rose by 23% in H1 2025, with a standout 38% increase in Q2 alone. Year-to-date, 1,173 Polestar vehicles have been sold in Australia, with the newly launched Polestar 4 mid-size SUV accounting for more than half that figure — 676 units.

This surge places Polestar 35th in Australia’s overall brand sales, outperforming competitors like Genesis and Zeekr. The sales momentum was also supported by end-of-financial-year promotions on the Polestar 3 and ongoing run-out offers for the Polestar 2.

Polestar Australia Managing Director Scott Maynard, who took over from Samantha Johnson just over a year ago, emphasized that the growth is being driven by private sales, not fleet deals. “It’s exactly the target where we want to be,” Maynard said during a media call. “Our June number [339 units] was actually held back by logistical limitations in delivering vehicles, not by lack of demand.”

Shift Away from Fleet, Toward Organic Growth

Unlike previous years that were buoyed by bulk fleet deliveries, the current growth reflects a healthier private sales model. “We’re still showing significant improvement even without last year’s bulk fleet orders,” Maynard added. “We still see a place for fleet, but not with the same appetite as before.”

While Polestar still trails established luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo in EV sales in Australia, Maynard remains unfazed. “It doesn’t greatly concern me that we’re not outselling Volvo. We don’t have the same number of sales points, nor do we intend to,” he said, highlighting the brand’s focused strategy and long-term growth potential.

What’s Next for Polestar?

Although no new vehicle will be added to the lineup in 2025, the brand is preparing to open order books for the Polestar 5, its upcoming high-performance EV aimed at rivaling the Porsche Taycan. However, customer deliveries for that model won’t begin until 2026.

Looking further ahead, the Polestar 7 SUV is expected to arrive in 2028, followed by the much-anticipated Polestar 6 sports car, which has been delayed.

To strengthen its market presence, Polestar recently launched a major awareness campaign, including a new partnership with the Melbourne Football Club’s AFLW Demons squad. According to Cars.News, the company is optimistic about continuing this growth momentum into the second half of the year.

“If I look at the brands that are growing in Australia right now — across all drive platforms — Polestar’s growth is second only to Rolls-Royce and Mini,” said Maynard. “That’s a premium competitor set, and we’re thrilled to be among the fastest-growing.”
