The Resident Evil community has been buzzing since the reveal of Resident Evil Requiem, and one detail in particular caught fans’ attention: the game’s protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, shares her surname with Alyssa Ashcroft. For longtime fans, this was a surprising callback to a character many believed Capcom had quietly left behind.

According to game.news Alyssa Ashcroft is an investigative journalist who originally appeared in Resident Evil Outbreak, a 2004 PlayStation 2 title that often flies under the radar in the franchise’s long history. With her sudden narrative relevance returning through her daughter, interest in Outbreak has resurfaced — and now is the perfect time to revisit the game that introduced her.
Released in North America on March 30, 2004, Resident Evil Outbreak is set just days after the initial T-virus outbreak devastates Raccoon City. Unlike the mainline entries, the game presents its story across five interconnected scenarios, each taking place in different locations throughout the doomed city. The title also stood out for its online co-op gameplay, a bold move for the series at the time.
Players choose from eight distinct survivors, each with unique abilities and backgrounds. Alongside Alyssa Ashcroft, the roster includes an RPD officer, a Vietnam War veteran, a surgeon, a bar waitress, and several other civilians forced to work together to survive the spreading infection.
To celebrate the renewed interest in Resident Evil Outbreak, Marcus Stewart and Charles Harte are continuing their Super Replay series, experiencing the game firsthand. The duo will stream a two-hour session today on Twitch and YouTube, starting at 11 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. ET. For those unable to watch live, full episodes will be uploaded later to the official Game Informer YouTube channel.
Fans can also catch up on all previously released episodes, from Episode 1 through Episode 12, to follow the full journey through Raccoon City.
With Resident Evil Requiem bringing the Ashcroft name back into the mainline spotlight, Outbreak is no longer just a forgotten spin-off — it’s now an important piece of Resident Evil lore worth revisiting.
