The legendary Mitsubishi Pajero may have been discontinued, but according to car.news, the newly unveiled Mitsubishi Elevance Concept could be a glimpse into the future of Mitsubishi’s next flagship SUV. Revealed at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, the Elevance is a bold plug-in hybrid (PHEV) concept that blends futuristic design with Mitsubishi’s off-road heritage — and many believe it could pave the way for a modern Pajero revival.
The Elevance Concept showcases striking exterior styling that aligns with Mitsubishi’s latest design philosophy, featuring aggressive front and rear ends reminiscent of the Xforce and Destinator SUVs. The signature “Dynamic Shield” grille returns with a more sculpted and closed-off look, complemented by multi-tier LED daytime running lights and honeycomb detailing. While the concept’s transparent lower doors and roof-mounted solar panels add a futuristic flair, they are unlikely to make it to production.

Under the sleek exterior, Mitsubishi highlights its expertise in plug-in hybrid technology. The Elevance is equipped with a quad-motor 4WD system using the brand’s Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) and dual-motor Active Yaw Control at the rear. This setup is designed to deliver superior handling both on-road and off, providing comfort and control in diverse driving conditions. Mitsubishi has not yet revealed performance or battery specifications but confirmed the use of a “large-capacity” battery.
Inside, the concept’s cabin emphasizes innovation and connectivity. The futuristic interior features expansive digital displays stretching from one A-pillar to the other, along with an additional screen embedded in the steering wheel. Mitsubishi introduces a new AI Co-Driver, which analyzes driving conditions and vehicle data in real time to suggest destinations based on each driver’s lifestyle. The result is a driving experience that blends advanced technology with personalized exploration.
The Elevance offers seating for six across three rows, with captain’s chairs in the second row and rotatable front seats that allow for a lounge-style setup when the vehicle is stationary. The floating center console, minimalist switchgear, and large rotary dial further emphasize Mitsubishi’s focus on simplicity and comfort.
According to car.news, Japanese media previously reported that Mitsubishi plans to revive the Pajero nameplate on a new plug-in hybrid SUV expected to debut in 2027, potentially sharing its platform with the Outlander. However, other reports suggest the name could return on the next-generation Pajero Sport instead.
While Mitsubishi has yet to confirm any production plans for the Elevance, the concept’s mix of innovation, capability, and heritage clearly signals the company’s desire to re-enter the full-size SUV segment — a space it has not occupied since the 2004–2011 Endeavor. The original Pajero factory closed its doors in 2021, marking the end of an era. But with the Elevance, Mitsubishi appears ready to write a new chapter in its storied SUV legacy.
