2. UltraSMR (Western Digital): This 2023 innovation by Western Digital is based on the SMR concept. This concept allows for greater data density by bringing data bands closer together. Thus, it is similar to the shingles covering the roof. UltraSMR takes it a step further by using a combination of hardware, software, & firmware enhancements.

Includes two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) & OptiNAND. This collaborative approach pushes the field density limit. So compared to current SMR and CMR drives, there has been a 10% & 20% increase in storage capacity.

3. Triple-Stage Actuator (Western Digital): Accuracy is key to achieving high data density. A three-stage actuator solves this challenge. It helps with more precise head positioning. This new system includes three independent pivot points.

It includes a voice coil motor (VCM) for basic movement, Milli actuator for fine adjustment, & micro-actuator for ultra-precise placement on data tracks. Users can use it for fast data entry, reduced vibrations, & improved reliability.

4. Helio-Seal (Hitachi): Originally developed by Hitachi, Helio-Seal technology replaces air with helium in a hard disk. This seemingly simple change comes with important benefits. Lower helium decreases its resistance to plate spinning. Thus, it reduces energy consumption, improves quiet operation, & improves heat dissipation.

Additionally, manufacturers can make adjustments near the plate. This further increases storage. But the need for hermetic sealing to prevent helium leakage adds complexity & cost to the manufacturing process.

5. HAMR (Seagate): Thermally assisted magnetic recording, or HAMR, is a revolutionary technology. It uses a nanoscopic laser diode to create & read small but sensitive data bits on a recording platter. This technology addresses a significant limitation of current HDDs. We can call them spontaneous magnetic polarity flips in adjacent data bits.

HAMR uses heat-resistant materials to create stable data bits at room temperature. This drive boasts incredible endurance & opens the way for HDDs with data densities of 2 to 5 terabits per square inch (Tbpsi). It performed nearly three times as well as the average car. Looking ahead, Seagate anticipates achieving densities of 10 Tbpsi by the end of the decade.

6. MACH.2 (Seagate): Typical drives use a single actuator arm that moves to specific data locations. Seagate’s MACH.2 technology cancels this pattern by adding two independent actuator arms. This allows the drive to access multiple data blocks at the same time.

So, effectively double the input/output performance per second (IOPS). Thus, increasing data throughput, & significantly reducing latency. Notably, MACH.2 achieves these performance advantages with 40% less power than single-actuator drives.

7. MAS-MAMR (Toshiba): Microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAS-MAMR) is a promising new technology aimed at increasing field density. MAS-MAMR, developed by Toshiba, uses short bursts of amplified microwave energy to change the magnetic orientation of the data bits, allowing more data to be stored in the same location.

Although performance models have shown promising results, major hurdles remain in the miniaturization of magnetic particles, maintaining thermal stability, & achieving optimal recording performance.
