City Car Brand Launches Toyota Camry-Sized PHEV Sedan

0

Smart, long known for its tiny urban cars measuring between 2.7m and 3.5m, has entered a new era of larger, more advanced vehicles. Since Mercedes-Benz sold half of the brand to Geely, Smart’s lineup has been growing rapidly — and the newest addition is the Smart #6, the company’s first-ever sedan.

With blacked-out alloy wheels and a pop-up rear spoiler, the Smart #6 is expected to become the sportiest model in the brand’s portfolio. The exterior design features a flowing, curved silhouette with full-width translucent housings for both the headlights and tail-lights. A LiDAR unit on the roof and cameras positioned behind the front wheel arches suggest that the #6 will come equipped with an advanced suite of driver assistance technologies, according to car.news.

Smart hasn’t revealed interior images yet, but based on its current models, the cabin is likely to include multiple wide displays and, at least for the Chinese market, an AI-powered voice assistant.

Bigger Than Ever

The Smart #6 is officially the largest vehicle the brand has ever produced, measuring:
4906 mm long
1922 mm wide
1508 mm tall
2926 mm wheelbase

This puts it close to the Toyota Camry in size. For comparison, the latest Camry comes in at 4920 mm in length and 1840 mm in width, making Smart’s new sedan surprisingly competitive in the mid-size segment.

Plug-In Hybrid Power

At launch, the Smart #6 will be sold exclusively as a plug-in hybrid using Geely’s NordThor Hybrid 2.0 system, delivering a combined output of 320 kW. The setup mirrors the one used in the Smart #5 EHD, pairing a 120 kW 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 200 kW rear electric motor and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT).

The electric-only range is rated at 285 km on the generous CLTC cycle, while total driving range reaches up to 1810 km. Smart has not disclosed battery capacity yet, but the #5 EHD — which offers similar numbers — uses a 41 kWh LFP battery, according to car.news.

A Strategic Step Into Sedan Territory

For a brand once defined by compact hatchbacks, SUVs and cabriolets, launching a sedan may seem unexpected. However, sedans continue to enjoy strong demand in China, Smart’s primary market. The Smart #6 positions the company to appeal to a broader customer base while stepping deeper into mainstream automotive segments.
