Mazda 6e EV Liftback Gears Up for Australian Launch

0

Mazda’s next-generation electric model – the Mazda 6e EV liftback – is edging closer to the Australian market. Recently, a right-hand-drive version was spotted on the streets of Sydney, drawing significant attention. According to car.news, repeated sightings of the car in Australia strongly suggest that its official launch is now only a matter of time. Earlier this month, the same vehicle was also seen in Melbourne, further confirming that Mazda has already begun local testing.

Known as the “EZ-6” in China, the Mazda 6e is jointly manufactured with Changan. Based on European specifications, the model comes with a single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup producing 190kW and 320Nm of torque. The standard 68.8kWh LFP battery delivers a WLTP range of 479km, while the larger 80kWh NMC battery increases range to 552km but offers slower charging speeds and slightly less peak power.

The car’s arrival in Australia will mark a milestone for Mazda, as it will be the brand’s first China-built model sold locally. It also serves as the indirect successor to the Mazda 6 sedan, discontinued in late 2024, and will compete head-to-head with the Tesla Model 3. The new liftback is both longer and wider than the outgoing Mazda 6, offering more road presence and practicality.

Mazda Australia’s managing director, Vinesh Bhindi, has confirmed that the company is building a business case for the 6e, though only in its fully electric form. This means the extended-range (EREV) version sold in China is unlikely to reach Australian shores. In Europe, the 6e is offered exclusively in Takumi and Takumi Plus trims, which include 19-inch alloys, a panoramic glass roof, a 14.6-inch infotainment display, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and heated, ventilated, power-adjustable front seats as standard.

Mazda’s EV ambitions extend well beyond the 6e. The company plans to unveil its first bespoke EV, built on a dedicated platform, in 2027. According to car.news, between 2028 and 2030 Mazda will also launch two additional EV models co-developed with Changan, further strengthening its global electric lineup.
