Mercedes-Benz Breaks 24-Hour Electric Vehicle Distance Record

0

German automaker Mercedes-Benz has set a new world record for electric vehicles (EVs) – with its Concept AMG GT XX covering 5749 km in just 24 hours, surpassing the previous benchmark by more than 1500 km.

The record was achieved at Italy’s famous 12.5 km Nardo Ring test track. Powered by three high-performance axial-flux electric motors, the Concept AMG GT XX maintained an incredible average speed of 300 km/h. Just eight days earlier, the Chinese-made Xpeng P7 had set the prior record of 3961 km, achieved at speeds of 210 km/h – according to car.news.

The Mercedes-Benz achievement was independently verified. Two bright orange prototypes ran almost continuously on the track for eight days, stopping only to recharge at ultra-fast 900kW stations. Over this period, they covered a total of 40,075 km – nearly three times the average annual distance of 13,800 km driven by Australian motorists.

The massive undertaking involved a 100-person crew working in three shifts. Among them were Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 driver George Russell and GT3 program racers such as Bathurst 12 Hour winner Luca Stolz.

Technology at the Core

The Concept AMG GT XX is built on the AMG.EA 800V electric architecture, which will underpin a new generation of AMG models – including a 750kW electric SUV slated for launch in 2027.

Its power comes from one motor at the front and two at the rear, producing a combined output of more than 1000kW. Energy is supplied by a unique 114kWh liquid-cooled battery developed by the brand’s Formula 1 team in the UK.

Cooling technology was crucial to the record-breaking performance. The battery could be replenished with enough energy for 400 km of driving in around five minutes. Experts noted that the chosen average speed of 300 km/h offered the best balance between travel time and charging intervals – according to car.news.

Future AMG Models

This high-output powertrain will also feature in the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe super sedan, set to launch in Europe and the UK by late 2026, with an Australian release expected in 2027.

Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe emphasized that the essence of AMG has always been defined by its drivetrains:
“In the electric era as well, our drive systems must be convincing across the board. That’s why we are the first to implement axial-flux motors and directly cooled batteries in fully electric models. These records have demonstrated the superiority of our technologies. Future AMG customers can be sure they’ll experience a genuine AMG – no compromises.”
