Home Court Advantage General Manager Cory Powers is well-known for his passion for his work and family. Whatever he does, he gives it his full time and attention, and the end result shows his commitment to excellence. His secrets to maintaining a strong work ethic long-term in order to grow a successful career that one can be proud of both now and in the future.

One of the most effective ways to maintain a good work ethic is to properly care for oneself. It may seem counterintuitive, but he rightly notes that it is impossible for a person to work well if he or she is sick, overtired, and/or in pain. Making time to exercise at least three times a week, maintaining a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep at night can spell the difference between a strong long-term work ethic and a faltering one. Mental health is also important, he notes. He encourages those who want to maintain a strong work ethic to watch out for negative thought patterns that could cause them to feel unmotivated, angry, or afraid to try new things.

Cory Powers also points out that it’s important to start each day on the right foot by getting to the office (or one’s home office) on time or even a few minutes early. What’s more, a person should start work fully prepared to take on the day’s tasks. Adopting a morning routine that empowers one to start work mentally and physically ready but notes that there is no “one-size-fits-all” routine to meet the needs of each individual. For some people, getting up early, getting some exercise, drinking a coffee, and then coming into the office work well. Others do best getting up and cooking a deluxe breakfast before heading out the door.

Finally, he says that a key to maintaining a strong work ethic is to continually measure one’s personal performance against past performance and current performance of other workers. Those who find, for instance, that a co-worker is far more productive than they are may want to ask the co-worker for advice on improving work ethic and boosting productivity. Individuals who find they cannot work as well as they did in times past may need to evaluate and change work and personal habits to improve their work ethic.

Cory Powers notes that to maintain a good work ethic, a person needs to evaluate his or her habits and work routine to change habits that aren’t working well and develop new habits that boost productivity and inspire one to give a job his or her best. He also points out that the benefits of developing and maintaining a strong work ethic are worth the hard work and sacrifice as a strong work ethic enables a person to take pride in and feel satisfied with his or her work, boosts one’s self-esteem, and enables one to advance his or her career.
